A Fine Day for a Calendar

On the internet April 1st is a day full of fake announcements from companies but today we have a real one: Hub Calendars.

We have deployed a simple event calendar which will help families keep track of birthdays, anniversaries, and other events.

Watch for a video later this week demonstrating the features or dive right in!

Mini Calendar on Hub Home

Above is what you’ll see on your hub home.

Congratulations on implementing the calendar. However there is one little problem. It seems to show first names only. This won’t work for us as we have multiple people with the same name and really won’t recognize people without the last name. So it ‘a pretty much unusable by us until this is corrected. But we are making progress!

    1. Dan says:

Hi Nancy, sorry about that oversight. When you hover over the events you’ll now see last names.

  2. Thanks for the calendar as it may keep me out of trouble with reminders of up coming birthdays etc. I am getting the full names of members only under the birthdays & anniversary’s categories. However by clicking the “other box” I can create my own title for an upcoming event for anyone I choose to enter. Thanks again. Mark Cottrell

    1. Katie says:

Hi Mark! At the bottom of the member list (when adding birthdays and anniversaries), you’ll see the option to click, “Other.” Choose that, and you can type in any name, and it will still appear as a birthday, even though it is not a birthday for a Hub member.

  3. Roger says:

Thanks for the calendar. I agree with the prior posting that last names are needed though.

    1. Katie says:

Hi Roger! We have fixed that little bug, and you should be able to see last names when you hover over an event.

We’re loving the CALENDAR and think the format is even better than the one we had with MYFAMILY! They say good things take time…and we’re glad that the time finally came for the CALENDAR to appear in our Hub…just as Spring brings forth some flowers, the CALENDAR has budded on our site!

We’re not experiencing the previously mentioned issues with the “last names” though…so it looks like you guys have resolved that concern in record time! KUDOS TO YOU!

    1. Dan says:

Debbie, thank you for expressing your appreciation! We’re very pleased that you and so many others like the calendar feature!

  5. I tried to add three columns of birthdays starting with April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and after hitting “save” the information shows up on the April 2016 calendar? How do we make the April 2015 stay in place?

Does not look like it’s possible to add more then 6 names to a date column; we have people that have the same birthday at 8 or 9 and to have to stop at 6 is not acceptable, unless it’s explained how a “carry-over” might be done?

    1. Dan says:

      Hi Joey,

Once you create an event you are taken to the next occurrence of the event. The next time an April 1 birthday will occur is 2016.

In most hubs it is uncommon to have more than 6 events in one day however the day will allow you to scroll down to see all the events if you have too many to fit.

Thank you so much! Love the new improvements and additions to our site!

    1. Katie says:

Hi Velma, we’re so glad you are enjoying our updates, and hope you continue to enjoy using Spokt!

Thank you for the calendar. I began entering data from our previous calendar and was met with two unexpected events. As I tried to delete an entry I received a 404 ERROR when I confirmed deletion. I backed out of that screen and when I went back into the calendar found what appeared to be an auto fill of some data that I had not yet entered. I again tried to delete the entry only to encounter the ERROR again. When I backed out again, ALL entries were gone. As a side note, it appeared that some of the auto fill data was placed on the wrong data.

Re Birthdays: Any way we could skip the birth year? I don’t know all of them and would not like to make something up. Otherwise a great, simple calendar. Thank you!

    1. Katie says:

Hi Arlys! Unfortunately, we cannot skip the birth year. You can set it to something like 2015, and they can change it if they would like.

  9. Nancy Bryant says:

When I mentioned the last name problem I was referring to the prefilled birthdays. I assume those were filled in based on the information in personal profiles. Additionally we’ve found some of these prefilled birthdays – but not all – that are showing up one day off.

  10. Dan says:

Very nice addition! Intuitive and easy to use. Thank you.

  11. AS the Hub Administrator, I trash canned over 200 birthdays( we don’t post those on our league site)…After logging back into the site later , all 200 had been re-added. Does an administrator not have control of this feature?

  12. Larry Czarnik says:

So it wasn’t an April Fools joke!
    Great job
Can we also have time, since some events don’t last all day!
Havent tried the birthday yet, but is as previous posters, would like both 1st and last name
Wat MyFamily calendar captured and if so will you auto populate ?
    Thanks for the calendar though!

Thank you for the calendar! It is a great addition. However, I see a flaw. When entering an anniversary, both spouses have to be members. Both spouses are not always members or one spouse could be deceased and the member still wants the anniversary remembered. After all, many members join for genealogy purposes. The note section is a nice feature. Overall, the calendar is very nice and thank you very much!!

  14. Millie Edmisten says:

Love, love, love, and appreciate the calendar. The only thing I would mention is not being able to add a birthday of someone who is not a member of the site. We have many small children and babies (and other people) in the family that we want to be aware of their birthday(s) but aren’t able to add them to the calendar using the ‘birthday’ icon. We can add them using the ‘other’ icon but this doesn’t keep the color code correct. Also, the anniversary will only let you add a member’s name. Not all spouses are members of our fam page.
But, thank you so much for the calendar.

    1. MollyL says:

I agree with Millie. We need to be able to add non-members to birthdays and anniversaries. And we need to be able to skip the year when entering birthdays as not everyone wants to give their birth year. Thank you, Spokt, for the calendar. Please make these enhancements as soon as you can.

  15. MollyL says:

When I mouse over a birthday that’s been auto-added by Spokt, in the full view calendar, the highlighted display of the birthdate is one day off (early) from the real birthdate. My brother Alex was born on April 22, 1965, but if I mouse over the orange box on date April 22, the display reads Alex’s 50th Birthday, April 21st, 1965. If I add a birthday myself, this error doesn’t occur.

  16. Debbie says:

As we’re getting acclimated to the format of our new CALENDAR features, I’m noticing a few things that you could improve.
1.) When adding an ANNIVERSARY (blue) for non-members, I used the “Other” option, as the ANNIVERARY involves two people who are not members of our site (yet, integral parts of the family and need to be “remembered”). The CALENDAR does not allow me to use “Other” for both people and asked me to choose a site member for the posting.
2.) I decided to put this particular anniversary date into the OTHER (green) option and ran into another problem. When posting an event into the OTHER (green) option, the drop-down menu for range of year dates begins with 2005. Consequently, I was unable to choose the 1949 wedding year for this Anniversary posting in OTHER.
    3. It seems that the “color” for ANNIVERSARIES is blue, and a light purple for GATHERINGS. I’m finding that these two colors are nearly the same on my computer screen. Would it be possible to change one of them to another color such as RED?
    4. We like to honor our family members who have “passed away” by posting their Dates Of Death on our site, along with their birthdays and anniversaries. Presently, I’ve been putting their Dates of Death using the OTHER (green) option. Would it be possible to add an option for this life event in addition to the BIRTHDAY and ANNIVERSARY ones?

Again, thanks so much for getting the CALENDAR feature going. Now, we’ll be able to easily “remember” every important member of our families…past and present!

    Debbie

    1. Dan says:

Hi Debbie, Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! At the bottom of the member list (when adding birthdays and anniversaries), you’ll see the option to click, “Other.” Choose that, and you can type in any name. This will allow you to add anniversaries and birthdays for people who are not hub members. I believe our designers have already picked new shades of colors for the events and we’ll pass the rest of your inquiries and suggestions to our product team.

  17. Michelle says:

Would it be possible to add a function for multi-date gatherings or events? Such as a camping trip – this may be a week, but dont want to add separately each day.

Also and ending date for recurring events. Such as a weekly event that occurs in the summer only. Could we have a place that sets a starting and ending time.

Thanks for considering this – LOVE the calendar otherwise.

    1. Katie says:

Thanks for your suggestions, Michelle! I have passed your note along to the Product Team. 🙂

  18. Chris says:

Wow! I am really dumb. Just noticed today the Calendar was added and it is May 20th! I rarely go to the Home page where I found it. Was wondering how I could have possibly missed it, but I see “Calendar” is not an option to go to on the other pages. Perhaps it could be added to the left side menu with News, Photos, Polls, etc?

First thing I did was add our week long reunion under Gatherings. Seemed I had to do each day one at a time. A begin and end date would be good.

But hey, I sure am glad we got a calendar now!!! Thanks!

    1. Katie says:

Hi, Chris! Thanks for your ideas, we appreciate them. I have passed them along to the Product Team. 🙂

  19. Deb Robole says:

My calendar’s dates did not populate in the migration from MyFamiliy.com. While I have access to the calendar template, it is useless without my 200+ birthday and anniversary dates. Kindly populate that data. Thank you!

    1. Katie says:

Hi, Deb! Could you contact support (http://spokt.com/support)? We can take a better look into your problem that way!

  20. Lisa says:

Yup, that’ll do it. You have my apiiocpatren.
